Biography of Martha Warburton

Martha Warburton, Bruce's paternal grandmother, was born in Croxdale, England, a coal mining community near Durham, in 1891. She died 79 years later in 1970 in Buffalo.

Martha was the first child of Randolph and Mary Ann Warburton. Although in later life Martha said she was an only child, she did have a sister. Ethel Warburton was born when Martha was 7 and died when Martha was 10.

At age 20 Martha married William Watkin. One year later their son Robert Randolph Watkin was born.

In 1922, William, Martha, and Robert left England, travelling from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and then to the mining town of Joggins. They spent four months in Joggins, before moving to the US, and settling in Canton, Ohio.
